Radon testing is the only way to know if you have radon in your home. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas. It is usually found in the ground under the house. Over time, radon can cause lung cancer. When buying a home, yes, I would test for radon. You can buy radon kits at your local hardware store, or you can have a professional come in and do the testing. Typically kits are left in the home for at least 24 hours. All doors and windows are to remain shut during testing. When a homeowner still lives in the home this makes it very difficult to have a valid test because they are going in and out. You can speak with any home inspection company and they can give you better advice that I can.

Here is a Radon Map https://www.radon.com/maps/ where you can see the levels across the United States. Rutherford County has an average level of 2.6. Warren County, Van Buren County, and even places in Davidson County have levels over 5.

According to the EPA, the maximum acceptable level of radon is 4.0 pCi/L. They recommend radon mitigation for levels between 2 and 4.
